Middlesex Centre Council Recap: May – Jun 2017
July 24, 2017 Derek
May 2017 Middlesex Centre received full scope accreditation for their management of municipal water and wastewater systems! šŸ˜€ Quite coincidentally, after much teeth gnashing over an alleged “raise” for the Director of Public Works & Engineering appearing on 2016’s Sunshine List, staff brought forth a new Compensation Management policy designed to curb costs and still ensure municipal staff receive the benefits their due. The new policy prevents staff from being provided both time in lieu and overtime. Time in lieu is offered to employees, and especially department heads, because they attend Council meetings in addition to working a full day,

Middlesex Centre Council Recap: Feb – Apr 2017
June 27, 2017 Derek
February 2017 In late February, my motion to join the group of municipalities asking the TVDSB to install automated external defibrillators (AEDs) in all schools across the board was passed. The TVDSB just included the funds to make this happen in their 2018 budget. March 2017 After careful deliberation and consideration of the consequences of the maintaining the status quo or a change, Council voted to continue to allow municipal staff to serve as volunteer firefighters, as long as their supervisor determines it won’t interfere with their normal responsibilities. We often get a big response on calls, so I’m confident

A Response to ItStinks.ca
June 13, 2017 Derek
Alright, let’s start this off with some quick points: The information photographed at itstinks.ca was provided to all parties on May 17. There is no backroom deal. In fact, there’s no deal at all yet. The paragraph photographed is a proposal by Tridon, which is being submitted to the OMB Thursday (along with proposals from any other parties). We have approval from the Ministry of Natural Resources to build the force main between the months of October and March. Now that we got what is, likely, the most important issues out of the way, let’s dive a bit deeper. The

Recent Key Decisions & Events: Feb. 19, 2017
February 19, 2017 Derek
Hello Ward 4! I just wanted to bring everyone up to speed on some recent decisions made, and what the impact is to the community, if any. The Off-Leash Dog Park pilot project that ran last summer, and into the fall/winter due to the weather, was recently reviewed by Middlesex Centre staff and Council. The pilot program was hugely successful in many ways, but there were many negative impacts at the Kilworth River Flats. A child was bitten by one of the dogs using the area. Dogs wereĀ routinely getting into area residents’ backyards, necessitating a lot of trespassing by area

Springer Ponds Development
February 15, 2017 Derek
On January 25, 2017 a public meeting was held to speak about an application from Springer Ponds Development Inc. where they sought to receive approval for a draft subdivision plan, along with a zoning by-law amendment. Here are the: Notice of Application & Meeting Planning Justification Report, and the Geotechnical Report That evening, though some will tell you otherwise, nothing was approved. During the public meeting we heard from the property owner/applicant, many concerned residents in the area, municipal staff, and Councillors on topics such as: The applicant’s financial capacity to complete any site works and related road works The

Comprehensive Look at Glendon Drive Shopping Plaza
January 25, 2017 Derek
If you’re already familiar with the information below, you can fill out this second survey now. The reason for this evening’s zoning by-law amendment variance request is that the developer is asking Council to reduce the minimum requirement that 65% of the lot frontage of the property include building faƧades, from 65% to 32%. We got down to 65% after previously approving a reduction from 75%. So, Maverick is essentially asking Council to approve a reduction from 75% building faƧades, down to 32% building faƧades fronting Glendon Drive. They also want to increase the maximum front yard setback from 1.5m

Latest Information on Pumping Station and Kilworth Wastewater Treatment Facility
January 18, 2017 Derek
ThisĀ is the current lay of the land. Middlesex Centre (MXC) staff and Council all want to see the Kilworth WWTF decommissioned as quickly as my neighbours who live even closer to it than I do, and are affected by it more than me. I can walk there in three minutes. I sympathize. If you have follow-up questions after reading recent information from the Kilworth-Komoka Ratepayers Association and this post, or something you saw on Facebook, I would be happy to do my best to clear anything up for you. My contact information can be found on MXC’s website. Some Background

January 5, 2017 Derek
Municipal staff recently notified me that there are several public meetings coming up during the January 25, 2017 Council Meeting. What to Expect in 2017 from Middlesex Centre
January 4, 2017 Derek
Well, in a highly unexpected twist of circumstances (1, 2, 3), I was appointed Ward 4 Councillor in Middlesex Centre on November 30, 2016. You can see the municipality’s press release here. During the months of November and December, I had the opportunity to hear from many residents already on a number of issues. Some I am supportive of, others I’m not. That is the nature of discourse, and perfectly reasonable. I wanted to highlight a few key measures I voted on during my first few meetings, and what to expect from the Municipality of Middlesex Centre (MXC) and me

Community Energy Plan Stakeholder Engagement Meeting
November 4, 2016 Derek
Christian Tham, Middlesex Centre’s Embedded Energy Manager, hosted a get together on October 25, 2016 to show off what the municipality has been doing to reduce its energy usage, the results of its efforts, a brief review of the results of a survey Christian put out to the community, and then a discussion on what residents of Middlesex Centre can be in their businesses and homes to help reduce energy usage. Background The Community Energy Plan will not be a bylaw, it will not be something to be enforced. It’s going to be a set of guidelines, a plan, for
